The DRINK Finale took place in March and April 2022 in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Finalists demonstrated their wave energy powered desalination systems and won part of the $1 million cash prize pool. Events took place over a 2-week period, including device viewings, in-water testing, and celebratory activities

Key Events

The prize hosted several exciting events to celebrate the DRINK Finale, including Device Viewing, Welcome Reception, Device Deployment live stream, and an Award Ceremony.

Educational Outreach

The Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office is dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for the next generation of marine energy experts. To help reach students across the country, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Coastal Studies Institute collaborated to create several educational resources for the Waves to Water DRINK Finale, including the Spark Squad comic book, workshops with wave energy experts, and instructional worksheets for building your own small wave energy converter device at home.
